Small steps for Uno

Today was spent sleeping in our bathroom. For some reason the room and our huge bathmat were comforting and Uno was able to rest after an anxiety-ridden past few days. We went in ever hour or less to give him love and cuddles. Unfortunately, the rest of the house is just too scary for him, so he keeps himself in the bathroom.

After seeing the successes of a few of the other fostered pups, I started to let the doubts creep in. Are we socializing him enough? Are we doing too much? Too little?

However God has a way of showing you things when you need it most. I asked S. to take the dogs out again and after they got back inside S. proclaims, "Hey! Guess who went potty outside?" Not only did we have our first potty training success, Uno was more excited to be outside (versus his shaking, skittish self), AND he climbed 5 stairs on his own.

Next time I'm going out with them so I can snap some pics of Uno enjoying outside and walking the steps. Tomorrow morning we have a walk planned and will get pics of that, as well.

Thank you to all who are cheering us on. It really is very much needed. Here's to Uno.

  5. Much love to you guys for doing what you are doing! In 2008, Hunter beagle came to me from a puppy mill via a local animal shelter. He was shy, timid, scared, nervous and jumped at every sound and sudden movement while inside the house. He took much solace in my other beagle, Duncan who taught him all the good dog skills. Today Hunt is confident, wags his tail, greets everyone with joy and loves the off-leash dog park. We call him 'the mayor.' Keep on doing what you're doing and Uno will absolutely respond. You guys are awesome!

  6. Oh Uno please tell yur foster parents to have patience. For the first two weeks after I was rescued from a lab I slept on the cold floor instead of the newish bed my Mommy bought for me. But now, after 16 months of bein free I have a long list of accomplishments. Sleepin on Mommy's bed, bein a Therapy Doggie n Ambassador for laboratory animals everywhere, runnin zoomies and aarrooing my head off just like a normal beagle!! You'll get there, I promise!!

  11. This breaks my heart. I wanted to adopt two but see that you need to already have a dog at home. Best of luck with Uno. I'll be following his progress.

  13. @ M

    Great blog.

    @ Kim

Are you sure you need to already have a dog at home? I didn't know that. I'd look further into that bearing in mind you'd like to adopt two.
